Daytrip: The Indiana Dunes

If you’re looking for an easy outdoor spot that feels like a little adventure without needing a big plan, Indiana Dunes is such a good choice. It’s one of those places where you can show up with a general idea and end up spending way more time than you expected—in a good way. There’s a nature center, walking paths, sandy dunes you can actually climb, and a beach where you can watch the waves roll in. It works just as well for a quick visit as it does for a full day out.

We started at the nature center, which is honestly a great place to begin, especially if you’re visiting for the first time or bringing kids along. It’s small but really well done, with exhibits about the dunes, local wildlife, and how the whole area came to be. It’s the kind of place where you learn a few interesting facts without feeling like you’re in a classroom. Plus, it helps you appreciate what you’re about to see once you head outside.

From there, we hit the walking paths. The trails are pretty manageable, even if you’re not an experienced hiker, and they take you through different types of scenery—some wooded areas, some more open stretches, and eventually sand. Walking on sand is a whole different thing compared to a regular trail, and you definitely feel it in your legs, but it’s part of the fun.

Climbing the dunes was a highlight. It’s not exactly easy, especially if the sand is loose, but that’s kind of the point. You take a few steps, slide back a little, laugh about it, and keep going. When you finally make it to the top, the view is worth it. You can see Lake Michigan stretching out forever, and it really doesn’t feel like Indiana in that moment. It feels big and peaceful and kind of impressive.

After wandering around the dunes, we made our way down to the beach. The shoreline at Indiana Dunes is great for just hanging out. You can sit and watch the waves, walk along the water, or let kids splash around near the edge. There’s something about listening to the waves that instantly makes everything feel calmer.

One thing we ended up doing for way longer than expected was looking for interesting rocks along the beach. It turned into a casual scavenger hunt—picking up smooth stones, striped rocks, and anything that looked a little different. It’s such a simple activity, but it keeps everyone engaged, and it feels oddly satisfying. Plus, it’s a fun way to get kids excited about nature without forcing it.

What makes Indiana Dunes even more interesting is the history behind it. The dunes were formed after the last Ice Age, around 10,000 to 14,000 years ago. As glaciers melted and retreated, they left behind huge amounts of sand. Over time, wind and waves from Lake Michigan shaped that sand into the dunes you see today. Some of them are still changing and shifting, which is kind of wild to think about when you’re standing on top of one.

The area is also surprisingly diverse when it comes to plants and wildlife. Within a short distance, you’ll see beaches, wetlands, forests, and dunes, all in one place. That’s part of why every trail feels a little different, even if you’re not walking very far.

Indiana Dunes is especially great for families because it’s so flexible. You can spend a couple of hours exploring the nature center and walking a trail, or you can pack snacks, take your time, and make a whole day of it. There’s room for kids to run around and get sandy, and plenty for adults to enjoy too.

Overall, it’s just a really nice place to unplug and get outside without overthinking it. Whether you’re climbing dunes, walking the trails, or sitting by the water watching the waves, Indiana Dunes feels easy, welcoming, and worth the trip. It’s definitely one of those spots I’d recommend if you want a laid-back day that still feels like you act

ually did something fun.
