Looking for a fun, interactive family outing that’s perfect for toddlers and preschoolers?Bellaboo’s Play & Discovery Center in Lake Station, Indiana, is exactly that — a creative indoor/outdoor destination where kids can run, climb, splash, and explore for hours. Plus, it’s just a short drive from Chicago, making it a perfect spot for a day trip.
Nestled inside Three Rivers County Park, Bellaboo’s is designed as a self-guided children’s play space where little ones — roughly from infant to nine years old — can burn off energy while engaging their imagination.

Play and Learn — Inside & Out
What makes Bellaboo’s so special is variety. Kids won’t get bored for a second. There are rooms and play areas dedicated to trains, water play, art, climbing, building, and even pretend village exploration. Every corner of the center encourages creativity, problem-solving, and imaginative play.

Here’s a closer look at what to expect:
All Aboard the Train Room This space is packed with large train tables, tracks, and vehicles to explore. Kids can build tracks, create stories, or pretend to be conductors — it’s hands-on, immersive, and endlessly entertaining.

Art Studio & Face Painting Room
Perfect for little artists, the Art Studio has easels, paints, brushes, and plenty of space to create. Kids can explore their creativity in a colorful, free-form way. It’s also a great spot to pause between more active play areas for a calm break.
The face painting room has a colorful assortment of face painting "crayons," plus a couple sinks and paper towels for easy cleanup. It’s a happy space where kids can bring their vision to life, without the worry of getting messy.

Water Play & Sensory Fun
The water play room was always a favorite with my kids! It features water tables, funnels, cups, and aquatic sensory toys. Children can explore cause and effect, practice problem-solving, and have a blast getting hands-on with water.
Be sure to pack a change of clothes — my kiddos always walked away really wet. So I’d just toss a change of clothes into a backpack. The family bathrooms offer plenty of space to double as a dressing room to change into those dry clothes.

Climbing, Slides & Adventure Zones
Bellaboo’s has a multi-level climbing structure with slides, ball pit, and even an airplane lookout. It’s a perfect space for kids to test their coordination, burn energy, and feel proud of their little adventures. In warmer months, outdoor play areas add a pirate ship, rock garden mining area, sand pit “dino digs,” and natural climbing features for even more exploration.
Pretend Village & Role-Play Rooms The pretend village is a child-sized town where kids can run grocery stores, serve pizzas, tend to pets at a vet’s office, or play house. These interactive role-play experiences are not only fun but also help develop social skills, creativity, and problem-solving. I’ve pretended to eat a lot of fake pizza in this area, haha.
Outdoor Adventures & Imagination Garden
The seasonal outdoor areas include a bicycle track, dinosaur dig pits, and nature-themed climbing zones. Families can also enjoy a seasonal outdoor water play area, offering refreshing splash-style fun during warmer months. The Imagination Garden encourages hands-on exploration of nature in a sunny, shaded environment — ideal for kids who love to combine active play with learning about the world around them.
Snack Breaks & Parent-Friendly Spaces
Parents can relax too! Bellaboo’s has a cozy café for snacks or lunch, plus comfortable seating throughout so caregivers can watch, read, or recharge while kids explore. Long visits are easy thanks to thoughtful spots to rest without missing any of the action.
Tips for your visit:
Bring socks — many play areas require them
Pack dry clothes — in case your kids get wet in the water play area (most kids do!)
Plan for a few hours — kids rarely want to leave early (I always spent AT LEAST 3 hours there every time)
Dress for outdoor play in warmer months
Consider Bellaboo’s for birthday parties or group outings - there offer private party options
Final Thoughts
From trains and water tables to climbing structures and pretend villages, Bellaboo’s in Lake Station, Indiana is a hidden gem for families looking for interactive, imaginative fun. It’s a place where small kids can explore, learn, and play for hours — and parents can enjoy watching it all unfold.
